TAQA Arabia / Voltalia consortium signs a Framework agreement to endorse the

“Repowering Zaafarana Project” under the NWFE Program.

During the launch event of the second follow-up report of the country platform for the "NWFE" program, TAQA Arabia / Voltalia consortium participates in the launching event and signs a Framework agreement to endorse the Repowering Zaafarana Project under the NWFE Program. The signing ceremony way attended by H.E Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Egyptian Prime Minister, The Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat and with a strong presence of TAQA Arabia, Eng Khaled AbuBakr – Chairman and Ms. Pakinam Kafafi – CEO, along with Eng Karim Al-Azawi, managing director of Voltalia Egypt and Jordan.

Earlier last year, the Government of Egypt (GoE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the consortium (TAQA Arabia and Voltalia) to redevelop plots Z5-Z8 commissioned nearly 15-20 years ago, with an existing capacity of 404 MW, the farm’s operational life is ending, necessitating its redevelopment. The Repowering Zaafarana Project will replace the existing infrastructure with a hybrid wind-solar power plant, with a combined capacity of around 3 GW (2 GW solar and 1 GW wind). This will be the first hybrid power plant in the MENA region, maximizing land use and supporting the national grid.

The Repowering Zaafarana Project is a cornerstone of Egypt’s renewable energy strategy and a significant contribution to the NWFE program. It promises substantial environmental, social, and economic benefits while supporting Egypt’s energy transition and sustainable development goals. Continued support and collaboration are recommended to ensure the successful implementation of this landmark project.

This project aligns with Egypt’s renewable energy strategy and its target of achieving 42% renewable energy in the electricity mix by 2030. It is a collaborative effort between TAQA Arabia and Voltalia, leveraging their expertise to deliver a hybrid wind-solar solution.
