TAQA Arabia and SomaBay Inaugurate Egypt's Largest Fully Solar-powered Desalination Plant
11 December 2024 – As part of their ongoing successful collaborations, TAQA Arabia and Somabay today inaugurated Egypt's largest desalination plant powered entirely by renewable energy. The first phase of the plant has a capacity of 3,650 cubic meters per day, ensuring a sustainable supply of safe water to meet the resort's needs. Additionally, the contract for the project's second phase was signed, which will add another 3,650 cubic meters per day of production capacity, with completion scheduled within six months.
The signing ceremony was attended by Mrs. Pakinam Kafafi, CEO of TAQA Arabia, Eng. Ibrahim El Missiri, Group CEO at Abu Soma Development Company, Eng Samy Abdel Qader Managing Director TAQA Power, Eng Hany Ezzat, Managing Director TAQA Water and Eng Ahmed Nafea Chief Technical Officer Somabay.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, the contract for the second phase of the solar power plant was signed, building on the success of the first phase launched in 2022 with a production capacity of 5 megawatts. Upon completion of both project phases, Somabay's renewable energy capacity will reach 7.5 MW of electricity and 7,300 cubic meters of water per day, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey.
In this context, Mrs. Pakinam Kafafi, CEO of TAQA Arabia, expressed her pride in the ongoing partnership with Somabay, stating: “We provide and manage tailor-made solutions with diverse production capacities to meet our customers’ needs. We are proud to equip Somabay Resort with sustainable energy facilities and integrated water, gas, and electricity services. This project underscores our confidence in Somabay’s commitment to a sustainable environmental vision as a leading company in the tourism and real estate sectors. We believe this vision will inspire more companies to adopt sustainability standards, contributing to the country’s strategy to diversify energy sources.”
For his part, Eng. Ibrahim El Missiri, CEO of Abu Soma Touristic Development Company, stated: “This partnership builds on our long-standing collaboration to strengthen our footprint in the sustainability sector, a commitment we have pursued through various projects already brought to life. We are pleased to continue this fruitful partnership with distinguished partners like TAQA Arabia, whose leadership in providing efficient, sustainable energy solutions is well-established. Through these collaborations, we aim to expand our portfolio and actively contribute to the state’s strategy in this vital field.”
It is worth noting that this collaboration extends a series of successful partnerships between TAQA Arabia and Somabay. In February 2024, the two parties further strengthened their cooperation by signing a contract to deliver natural gas through pipelines developed by TAQA GAS.
